HUMANITIES AND ENGLISH

Humanities and English at St Joseph’s College use many of our General Learning Area classrooms.  Specific classes are taught in areas which have resources within each room specific to tasks.  For example, the Flexible Learning Spaces in McAuley area provide innovative and flexible learning spaces for all students.  Digital resources are integral to our student learning in both English & Humanities, therefore computers within classrooms are provided as well as Apple TV, large televisions and smart boards; these are also supported by our students own devices.

Many other areas at the College and in the wider community are also used by the Humanities and English Departments to facilitate their curriculum programs as can be seen below.

In order to prepare our students for the Business world we run the Australian Business Week Game for all Year 11 Commerce students.  For this, we have specialised classrooms allocated for the theory and practical components.

Civics and Citizenship units are covered as part of Humanities, so class excursions are organised for the Mildura and District Law Courts at Years 9 & 10.

Geography students attend various fieldwork sessions around the Sunraysia district.

The Mercy Campus is the venue for the Year 8 Medieval Day, where activities are held both within the classrooms and in the Stadium facilities.

Another example of our students utilising our digital facilities is where St Joseph’s College History students use the online portal to museums, as we can’t actually travel to capital cities around the world to see examples.

Specialised VCE English rooms in the VCE Langtree Park Area for Year 12 students make use of the ability to open up rooms and deliver lectures and collaborative work spaces between different classes.

English also utilize the Mercy Theatre at several times throughout the year to view performances.

The Sacred Heart Hall is also used for public speaking training where large audiences can be accommodated.

The Haenen Library provides valuable facilities for Junior Classes, who make use f the reading room during class time to cover wider reading.  The Haenen Library is a supplementary resource for both domains for the housing of many learning resources; including DVD's, books, maps and research guides.
