CURRICULUM : The Arts

GENERAL

Year 7 and 8

Dance

The Year 7 dance unit gives a brief introduction to the theoretical and practical components of dance as an academic subject.  The unit caters for a range of capabilities, allowing those with dance experience to extend their knowledge.

Dance technique is introduced, with a particular focus on safety, co-ordination and body awareness (particular spatial awareness).

The major assessment task requires the development of problem solving and group work skills, and encourages the use of compositional elements to prepare a performance piece.

Students look at popular dance in the 20th century, particularly the 1920s and 1950s.  This is looked at from a compositional and cultural perspective.

Students are also asked to reflect on their personal development and learning activities.

Drama

The aim of Year 7 Drama is to introduce students to improvisations (both mime and dialogue) with storylines, characters and with more than one scene.  Students will develop teamwork, stagecraft skills and develop critical audience skills.  They will have an opportunity to attend performances in Mime and Dialogue when required as well as other excursions.

Music

This course is aimed at giving students a well-rounded introduction to music.  Students gain valuable practical experience on percussion, drum-kit, keyboard, guitar and vocals.  Students learn the basics of music theory and sound, researching different instruments and comparing their sounds.  Students are exposed to a variety of musical styles and cultures and gain an appreciation of music within society, through the times.  Students compose and rehearse their own works and perform them for an audience.
