CURRICULUM : Mathematics

GENERAL

Year 7 to 10 Mathematics at St. Joseph's College is based on CSF guidelines with material being drawn from CSF Level 5 at Year 7 and 8 and CSF Level 6 at Years 9 and 10 and as such we have adopted the Rationale of the CSF as given on page 5 of the Curriculum and Standards Frameworks.  We aim to cater for the needs and abilities of all our students and at the same time attempt to keep as many future pathways open for as long as possible.

Years 7 and 8

All students at Year 7 and 8 follow a common course with teachers catering for the individual needs of students within their own classrooms.  Teacher's aim to cater for the needs of student's operating at CSF level 4 or below by modifying the work and the assessment tasks as they see fit.  This group of students are withdrawn into a smaller class so that they receive more attention.

Students who are working beyond the CSF level at which the classwork is pitched are catered for by the classroom teacher providing extension tasks and through our enrichment program where students are withdrawn once a week for extension activities. These extension groups take part in the Australian Mathematics Challenge, The Australian Mathematics Competition and the Australian Mathematics Enrichment  Program conducted by the Australian Mathematics Trust.

VO (Years 9 and 10)

At Year 9 the majority of students follow a common course based on CSF level 6.  A small number of students elect to take VO Unit 1A which is a modified course catering for the needs of student's who have experienced difficulties with Mathematics in the past.  This course aims to base learning on the concrete experiences with lots of practical experiences.

At Year 10 students can follow two different pathways.  Students who are ready and able to deal easily with abstract concepts are encouraged to enroll in General Mathematics in Semester 1 and Introduction to Mathematical Methods in Semester 2. This leads to VCE Pathways as shown in the Pathways document.  Students who still need to work with concrete materials and practical examples are encouraged to take General Mathematics A and General Mathematics B.
