Year 7 and 8
Science for Year 7 students at St Joseph's College Mildura, is aimed at providing a wide range of experiences in the laboratory. The course is designed to introduce a variety of areas within Science: for example Physical Science, Chemical Science, Biological Science and Earth Science. Basic laboratory and equipment handling skills are introduced and developed in order to enhance students' ability to explore measure, test, analyse, evaluate and communicate.
Science for Year 8 focuses the students more tightly on the formal knowledge, techniques and conventions of science, including report writing and the use of quantitative data. A fundamental goal is to stimulate, respond and nourish curiosity, wonder and questioning. Students show increasing initiative in guiding their own learning. With increasing confidence, they conduct investigations, solve problems and learn basic sampling techniques. Students practice safe, responsible and ethical behaviour when conducting investigations using standard equipment and chemicals.
The science course is structured in a way that enables students to work towards achieving the Victorian Essential Learning Standards for Level 5 Science which are organised in the following two dimensions:
- Science knowledge and understanding
- Science at work
VO (Year 9 and 10)
In General Science CORE A and Core B students are encouraged to develop a greater awareness of the application of Science to help explain everyday phenomena and general life experiences. Students apply unifying concepts and theories in a variety of situations, and employ scientific ways of working in their everyday lives. Students will evaluate experiments and arguments and the validity of results. They conduct investigations using a variety of information sources, relate findings to other situations, and use their findings to stimulate further questioning.
Enhancement Units
The aim of these units is to provide a range of experiences which will be of value to students in the future. They complete their study of the ‘big ideas' of Science and also gain a solid grounding for the study of VCE Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology.
The science course is structured in way that enables students to work towards achieving the Victorian Essential Learning Standards for Level 6 Science which are organised in the two dimensions:
- Science knowledge and understanding
- Science at work
