INTERDISCIPLINARY : Numeracy

Numeracy is an ability to use 'some mathematics... to achieve some purpose... in a particular context'  (Numeracy = everyone's business, 1997).

At St Joseph's we aim to have all students functional at a numerate level of mathematics, thereby enabling them to take an active and meaningful role in society.

St. Joseph's has adopted many strategies and programs to assist the achievement of National Numeracy Goals, including early intervention strategies and the development of an integrated curriculum.

Our College offers:

  • Foundation Mathematics Courses from Year 7 through to Year 11 focusing on the practicalities of mathematics in the everyday environment.

  • The National Literacy and Numeracy Week is promoted throughout the whole College each September. During this week games, activities and competitions are run and the various subjects focus on showcasing numerate aspects of their discipline.

  • The National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy [NAPLAN] is conducted in May each year. NAPLAN consists of two Numeracy tests [one with the aid of a scientific calculator and one without] for all Year 7 and Year 9 students in Australia.

  • On-line testing of students which can be carried out with the aid of the AIM on Demand system. This allows teachers to identify students at risk and create appropriate learning programs.
