A better world for women means a better future for all humankind. Observed annually on March 8, International Women’s Day highlights the complex challenges that women everywhere face which are often exacerbated by discrimination and disadvantage related to race, ethnicity, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and other factors.
This year’s theme, ‘Cracking the Code: Innovation for a Gender Equal Future’, emphasised the importance of discovering more inclusive and accessible approaches to combat the marginalisation of women by using creative technologies, bold thinking, and progressive education.
Working towards gender equality is everyone’s responsibility. Allyship is crucial. Men and boys can help by calling out sexism and misogyny even when it may feel uncomfortable or unpopular to do so.
At St Joseph’s College, we actively contribute toward a more equitable tomorrow by teaching our students about issues linked to gender equality today, both within the curriculum and during special events, such as Seminar Days, guest speaker visits, and other programs.
On Wednesday, the college held a morning tea for staff and collected donations for McAuley Community Services for Women. McAuley ‘help(s) women and children to build new futures free from violence’ by providing housing, employment support, and children’s programs to uplift and empower. The Mercy Action Group also raises funds for McAuley during the school year.

College Events
In another busy week, students left on exciting excursions and the Opening Mass brought our community together in welcome.
- On Monday, our dancers travelled to Melbourne to immerse themselves in marvellous movement on their VCE Dance Trip.
- Seventeen aspiring young leaders headed to Adelaide for the 2023 Secondary Youth Leadership Conference. Held on Tuesday, this full day run by youth for youth inspired future leaders with motivating guest speakers and activities to build teamwork, coaching and communication skills.
- The college welcomed guests on the first Teacup Tuesday of 2023. After a tour of the Enright campus, the College Executive and I invited everyone to stay for morning tea in the beautiful Mercy Heritage Centre.
- On Tuesday evening, the Year 8 Information Night gave families the chance to learn everything about the Mercy campus and the cohort’s upcoming adventure in the Grampians this May.
- We welcomed students and staff at our Opening Mass on Thursday. During the Mass, we presented our student leaders to the college community and officially awarded them with their badges of office. The Class of 2023 received their special Year 12 badges, too. Welcoming our new community members with a Catholic service allows us to show that everyone belongs in our faith community.
God bless.
